God Has the Answer to Your Biggest Problem, concluded

How Does That Work?

Last week I compared the fever blister virus with the sin virus and commented on the suppressive effect that lysine has on the fever blister virus. This week we will consider God’s spiritual lysine that can help suppress the effects of the sin virus.

First it might be helpful to identify the symptoms of the sin virus and that can be summed up by the second part of one verse, Romans 14:23b where it is written: “and everything that does not come from faith is sin.” Just think on that a moment, wouldn’t you agree that covers a vast amount of territory? I’m a retired Christian grandfather and I can potentially sin like crazy just sitting at my desk alone. Do you have fears, doubts, concerns, anger, irritation, impatience; do you think these are of faith? The sin virus is much more devious and deadly than the fever blister virus and can manifest its symptoms in ways one might not expect.

The starting point in dealing with any disease is a proper diagnosis; humanity’s diagnosis is very simply explained in the Bible, we are born with the disease of sin and it will never leave us as long as we are in these mortal bodies. The penalty of this disease is death and that has been paid for by the shed blood of Christ so the only remaining problem is dealing with its symptoms during our lives on earth.

In Galatians 5:19-21 some of the most obvious symptoms of the sin virus are described and to those listed you can add everything that is not of faith:

19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

In Galatians 5:22-25 we find a summary of life displaying the symptoms of a Spirit led life:

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

A Spiritual Lysine

God has graciously provided what we need to control and suppress this sin virus if only we will avail ourselves of the therapy He has provided. The reality of our situation is when the Holy Spirit is in control of our lives the sin virus is suppressed, when the sin virus is in control of our lives the power of the Holy Spirit is suppressed.

Both the Holy Spirit and our sin virus are with us as long as we inhabit these mortal, unredeemed bodies; when we are resurrected we will receive new, heavenly bodies that will be free of the sin virus; I long for that time.

God knew our lives would be filled with tactical struggles against sin and gave us a way of winning them. The pattern is described in 1 John 1:8-10 where it is written:

“8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.”

Confession of sin is like spiritual lysine, it is to be used every day to control the sin virus and if we feel sinful thoughts coming into our mind we need to confess them quickly before the thoughts becomes actions. By doing this we can suppress the sin virus and retain the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

God’s word can be trusted, this really works!
